Seeing the best in people

Every year, on the Saturday before Remembrance Sunday, I would help Bob (Dad) collect the poppy wreaths from whichever shop in the town had them on display. We would then take them into St. Mary's Church to set them up on the alter. Dad always explained to me that there was a definite "pecking order" in which the wreaths had to be placed on the alter and would take great care in seeing that this was followed. One year, just as we were about to finish two boys walked into the church and sat themselves down. It would have been very easy to think that they were up to no good and were waiting for us to leave, and who knows what they would have did. But this thought did not even enter Dad's head. On our way out he said hello and took the time to explain to them what we were doing and the meaning of Remembrance Sunday. He even went as far as to say that they would be most welcome to attend the service the next day. We then left the boys in the church. I will never know what their motives were but I'd love to think that Dad's words to them made a difference. Needless to say every poppy wreath was still in place on the Sunday. This was just another example of how Dad always saw the best in people.
